Missing Anarkali after the crazy season finale? Connect with the show’s star and creator at the City of Bhangra Festival in Vancouver and Surrey.
KayRay (Kiran Rai) and Ms. Mutta (Rakhi Mutta) will join dozens of international performers at the annual festival, presented by the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration Society (VIBC) from June 11 – 18.
Our top three event picks for our favourite Bhangra festival:
1. Where Not To Do Bhangra. We are so excited about this one! A genre-bending evening of Burlesque, Bhangra, drag and desi sketch comedy, presented with South Asian Arts (the people behind I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter Chicken!) and Gastown Cabaret. Not for the faint of heart. Sunday, June 12 from 7 – 10pm at Rio Theatre. Tickets for this 19+ show are $20 and $25. 2. Bhangra: SHE. Be inspired by these six fearless women who will share their stories of creativity, struggle and performance in this series of workshops and discussions. Featuring Vancouver rapper Horsepowar; Toronto digital storytellers Kiran Rai (KayRay) and Rakhi Mutta; LA-based DJ and producer Bianca Maieli; America’s leading dhol player Malinder Tooray; and up-and-coming Bollywood singer Jasmine Sandlas. Thursday, June 16, 5 – 9pm at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey. Tickets are free.
3. JALOOS: City of Bhangra Edition. Our fave Vancouver DJs Lil India team up wth KayRay, DJ Maieli, Horsepowar, and Malinder Toor for a powerhouse musical night. Extra love if you come sporting a t-shirt with your fave 90s Bollywood star. Friday, June 17, 10pm at Fortune Night Club. Tickets for the 19+ event are $12.
