Help save the whales while sipping wine. It can really happen! Here’s your Vancouver weekend events guide for October 12 – 14, 2012.

VIFF Closing Gala

Tickets are still available for the Vancouver International Film Festival Closing Gala, as well as a few other great films playing Friday night. The Closing Gala film, Holy Motors, features Denis Lavant in 11 different characters/identities who intersect across Paris in a white stretch limo over the course on long day. There’s some beautiful cinema to be experienced in this film, which features a small part with singer Kylie Minogue.

Friday, October 12 at 7:00 p.m. & 9:30 p.m. | Visit viff.org for locations

We’ll be at the VIFF Closing Gala and After Party – say hi if you’re there too!

Toast to the Coast

Join 550 food & wine lovers and support the Vancouver Aquarium at the Toast to the Coast event Friday night. Graze on canapés from Terra Breads, YEW Restaurant, The Sonora Room, The Sandbar and several other fabulous Vancouver restaurants, and sip on sumptuous BC wines (including some of our faves, Tinhorn Creek, Red Rooster and Quail’s Gate). The evening includes music, fashion and a chic auction too. Tickets $95.

Friday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m. Vancouver Aquarium, 845 Avison Way, Vancouver | vanaqua.org/fundraising-events/tttc.

South Asian Dressing

Penny Priddy presents a lecture on the art of South Asian dress over the centuries. Fingers crossed, the talk doesn’t venture into the “exotic” and “oriental,” but it does look like it could be an interesting afternoon. From cultural convention to practical contemporary, models demonstrate the significance of wedding regalia, turban wrapping and children’s clothing. Tickets $22. Sunday, October 14 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Hycroft Manor, 1489 McRae Street, Vancouver | smoc.ca
