Whisky + Kilts = Fabulous Getaway with the Girls.

Planning a holiday with a group of girls can test even the strongest of relationships, so when a group of friends and I were looking into booking a mini-vacation, it was only natural each girl had their own idea about where to go. We were looking for the ideal destination city where we could sightsee, shop, and celebrate my sister’s birthday in style. After hours of research and discussion, we decided on Scotland, land of rolling green hills, whisky, and men in kilts – and home to the city of Edinburgh, the perfect spot for a group of girlfriends to relax and party.

Where to Stay

Nestled in the west-end of Edinburgh, the Bonham Hotel is a hidden treasure with a contemporary blend of rich textures and sassy colours. The boutique hotel is set in a converted Victorian townhouse, and features uniquely decorated rooms that are wonderfully chic, yet comfortable. The bathrooms were stocked with Molten Brown products, a tick on my list, and the bellboy even sported a kilt!

What to See & Do

Edinburgh Castle is absolutely beautiful, situated on top of a hill with the most exquisite views of the highlands and Arthur’s infamous seat. Spend the afternoon perusing the Scottish Crown Jewels while reliving history in this former home to Scottish kings and queens. Another must see is the Witches’ Memorial, where over 300 women were burned as witches between the 15th and 18th century.

You can’t leave Edinburgh without trying the national drink, and The Scotch Whisky Experience is the perfect way to try different whiskies from across Scotland. One of our favourite parts of the vacation, this insider tour shows you how a single malt whisky is produced, and includes a chance to sample whisky from one of the four regions. What better way to celebrate than toast our drinks in a breath-taking room, holding the largest collection of whisky in the world!

Where to Eat

The Witchery by the Castle is probably one of the best restaurants I have ever been to, with a menu that is as much a treat for the eyes as it is for the taste buds. Enjoy local Scottish fare in the gorgeous wood paneled room, with stunning tapestries and candlelit tables, creating a romantic ambiance despite its name. For drinks, check out Tigerlily, a glamorous hotel/bar that proved to be the only happening place in Edinburgh during our winter vacation.

Where to Shop

With endless tourist shops selling ridiculously funny ‘Jimmy’ hats, tartan kilts and shortbread, there’s lots of kitsch to go around, but we sought refuge in Edinburgh’s famous department store, Jenners. Another great standby, Harvey Nichols, didn’t disappoint. My fabulous find? A pair of black leather elbow length gloves, which I had sought after for months, while my sister treated herself to a beautiful pair of bubblegum pink Dior shoes.

Why you should book Edinburgh for you next getaway or romantic weekend out? The food, the shopping, the whisky, the culture and the historic atmosphere.
