Beautiful people, designer cocktails and luxury style – say hello to India's jet set lifestyle in Mumbai.

It's India's moment in fashion and there's no better place to experience it than in the glittering seaside city of Mumbai. More than just the country's film capital, Mumbai is India's newest fashion centre where it's all about the glitz, glamour and the newest, hottest designers. The third story in our three-part series, Paromita Naidu from Lotus Eye brings us Style Notes on what trends are emerging in haute cities across India.

Mumbai Days

Work: In Mumbai, you still see the Indian suit and sari for work, but many women pair dressy tunics with trousers, scarves, heels and bangles. In larger corporate offices, hotels and other uber-professional realms, you see the occasional power suit. However, daytime beckons for one thing – young or old, suburban or urban, homemaker or office worker – everyone sports sunglasses in this town, and more so than any other city I have travelled in India. Designer shades are the hottest daytime accessory, and 70s-era large frames are super chic.

After work: Even during the week, restaurants are packed in the evenings and diners dress to impress. In Mumbai it's about where you are that defines what you wear. Eating at an outdoor candlelit beach bistro in Juhu or a casual Italian eatery in Bandra, you might see designer jeans and tanks paired with beaded/stone necklaces, and wedge heels. Or you might see leggings, a long designer tunic, big hoop earrings and gladiator sandals. In Colaba (southern Mumbai), at a mid-week meeting in an elegant seafood restaurant or cruising the luxury Phoenix Mills Mall, you may come across women in cocktail dresses, but fabrications are less nightclub and more tropical island – think linens, raw silks, sheerness and lightness.

Mumbai nights

Friday & Saturday: Gorgeous locals grace the newest and hottest lounges and clubs in this seaside city. Hot and sexy are the key descriptors! Jumpsuits, 70s glam, mini’s and skin-tight leathers are seen everywhere. Top label purses and shoes are a must! Fendi, Dior, Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Cavalli, Bulgari, Versace, Jimmy Choo and Lanvin have signature stores in Mumbai. And don’t forget to pile on the jewelry! Even this minimalist sported chunky bangles and statement earrings.

Special Celebrations: For red carpets, private parties, the launch of a new boutique hotel, store or restaurant: modern contemporary Indian outfits are top choice for the fashionable set in Mumbai. Masaba Gupta, Varun Sardana, Morphe by Amit Aggarwal, Prashant Verma, Urvashi Kaur, Falguni and Shane Peacock, and Anand Kabra are some of the newer labels seen these days.

Weddings and big family events still see guests wearing the more well known designers like Sabyasachi, Tarun Tahiliani, Ritu Kumar Label, Manish Arora, Varun Bahl,  Nachiket Barve, Anita Dongre, Anamika Khanna and Gyatri Khanna.

Where to Shop

Delhi may be India's shopping mecca, but Mumbai boasts several must-see boutiques.

  1. Ensemble is run by Tina Tahiliani Parikh, the sister of designer Tarun Tahiliani, who dressed Jemima Khan for her wedding.
  2. Sangita Sinh Kathiwada's Mélange—located in a 100-year-old wine cellar that feels like a cave and stocks young designers.
  3. The Courtyard is a collection of designer shops where one can find Ashish N Soni, Rajesh Pratap Singh and Rohit Bal.

Style observations by this Mumbai fan: New, newer, newest, bold fashion choices, celebs, red carpets, bubbly and top designers reign supreme. In this Indian city, all that glitters IS gold.
