Art Deco Fashion Exhibit

For Saturday morning, take in brunch at The Flying Pig in Yaletown, and then drive over the Burrard Street bridge to take in every fashion lover’s dream, the Art Deco Chic exhibit at the Museum of Vancouver. Featuring gowns by Schiaparelli, Chanel, Lanvin and Patou, the exhibit showcases the geometric shapes and beading made popular during the 1920s era. Gaze at beautiful gowns and get inspired to create your own art deco inspired dress or suit (we love translating couture designs into embroidery for our own Indian outfits). It’s like Vancouver’s own Costume Institute fashion exhibit. Here are some delightful ideas to update your Spring wardrobe for summertime. Key trends: colourful headbands, prints, maxi dresses, and bright or pastel colour. Just a few of our favourite things.

1. Headbands

Blair Waldorf made the headband a must-have accessory four years ago when she debuted her dark mane on Gossip Girl. Update her signature look of yesteryear with a bejeweled or knit headband. Our pick: This headband from New York designer, Deepa Gurnani (whose headbands Blair Waldorf herself has worn on Gossip Girl), brings a jolt of colour to brighten your wardrobe for summer. 2. Neon

Neon doesn’t need to scream cheezy motel. Instead, we love the softer iterations of neon (like the jacket above), or in the form of accessories like necklaces or bags. Our pick: What says, “summer love” better than mesh? Maybe flowers and the sun, but this light moto jacket in neon comes close. Throw over a cotton tank in coral and skinny jeans and head off to park. $68 at NastyGal.com

3. Bright colour

Summer makes us think of citrus fruits, mangos and watermelons. Translate these bright fruit colours into your wardrobe for a fresh, summer update. If you feel that a bright coloured top or jeans is too much for your all-black closet, consider adding a colourful belt, necklace or purse into the mix. Our pick: The Rebecca Minkoff Mac (above) in tangerine or neon green is a fun way to incorporate bright colour into an outfit. 4. Maxi skirts and dresses 

We love maxis! And we’re not talking pads either. Maxi dresses and skirts bring a certain elegance that the mini just can’t compete with. Spagetti strap and halter maxi dresses are versatile enough to take from spring to summer to fall, with simple accessories like a cardigan, blazer or leather jacket, and changing up your shoes from flats to sandals, and then boots in the fall. 5. Pastel and prints

Leave your grey shift in the closet for next winter, it’s time to invest in some pretty pastels and vibrant prints. Incorporate both trends in a bold way by picking up a new print dress or trench coat in pastel, or opt for a softer look with a pastel top or printing headband. Our pick: the pajama chic trend is still strong, and this pastel print top in silk georgette (above left) from Le Fou by Wilfred is so sexy and comfortable, and perfect paired with jeans for a drink date (mojitos!) with friends. Our second pick: we love this stunning, psychedelic print dress (above right) from McQ by Alexander McQueen. It’s a bit of an investment at $1135 CDN, but the strong shoulders and just above the knee-length will carry it on into fall. Available online at here.

Michael Kors Saffiano Crossbody Bag

It’s time for mom to trade in her 1990s era “Jessica for Sears” bag, for something more functional, fashionable and current. We recommend this soft, leather Michael Kors Saffiano Crossbody Bag, preferably in orange or brown. Retails for $148 at Holt Renfrew.

Tiffany Celebration Rings

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a mom who doesn’t want a diamond ring for Mother’s Day, or any day. Bangles by Expression

We reported on Manish Arora joining, Paco Rabanne last year, but it looks like his one year contract has ended with no renewal in sight.

There’s no news on why Paco Rabanne didn’t renew Manish’s contract, although they seem to be happy with his critically-acclaimed collections for the fashion house: ”The strong media impact of the past two seasons has enabled Paco Rabanne to partake with strength in the universe of contemporary fashion.”

Manish is the only Indian designer to consistently show at Paris Fashion Week, and his list of famous clients includes Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and Sonam Kapoor. And while other India designers seem to design almost exclusively for Bollywood (Manish Malhotra, we’re talking to you), Manish Arora has bypassed Indian cinema for a global market, with the exception of our favourite Indian fashion darling, Sonam Kapoor.

On designing for Bollywood, Manish Arora said: “I never did it, and I don’t have the intention of getting into it either. Even with the stars – I do it only for Sonam Kapoor, and that too, not because she is a star, but a good friend of mine, and I like her.”

Autumn Winter Ready-to-Wear 2012/2013

Leather, fur, and metallics were key features at the Manish Arora for Paco Rabanne show at Paris Fashion Week. This collection was markedly different from Manish’s personal show at the same fashion week, and his futuristic, disco inspired show for Paco Rabanne at the Spring Summer 2012 Paris Fashion Week.

Futuristic metallics, strong angular shoulders, minis and knee-length pencil skirts where key features in Manish Arora’s debut collection for Paco Rabanne.

Product: eos Lip Balm

What is it: An egg-shaped lip balm that is 95% organic and 100% natural. The balm includes moisturizing ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil and vitamin E, and is paraben/petroleum/phthalate/gluten-free. It comes in six different flavours (our favourites are strawberry sorbet and sweet mint).

What it does: Moisturizes and lubricates your lips with lots of bold flavour.

What Jugni Style loves: This lip balm glides on clear, leaving a fruity, citrus flavour (I tried tangerine flavour). It was the perfect tool to use during a cold rainy day, protecting our lips from becoming chapped and leaving a healthy glow. The only downside is the lip balm is a little big, so smaller lipped people may find it a bit messy. It would also be nice if it came in a few tinted shades to add some colour to our lips.

Our rating: For luscious, moisturized lips, this is a great product. We would love if this balm came in a few sheer tints to add some colour to our lips, and it’s a little big so you can carry it in your pocket. 3/5

Held to raise funds for the Costume Institute, the Met Ball is where actors and models come together to toast fashion and appreciate art (this year is the Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations exhibition). It’s also our chance to dream of attending fashion galas and critique the sartorial choices of many beautiful people.

Our Favourite of Met Ball 2012: We missed her on the red carpet live feed, but Beyonce was a vision of glowing beauty in this Givenchy couture gown.

It was risque, but we love it. We were also enamored by many other actors and models at the Met Ball 2012.

In black:

Mary Kate Olsen (left) in The Row, accompanied by Fred Leighton jewels. Her look was gothic drama and we loved it. Kate Bosworth (middle) stood out in a Prada mini and Fred Leighton art deco bracelets, while dreamy couple Giselle and Tom Brady (right) wore Givenchy and Tom Ford respectively.

Singer Lana Del Rey (left) was striking in a black-caped Joseph Altuzarra gown, while Rooney Mara (centre) was stunning in Givenchy, making her the third woman to wear Givenchy at the Met Ball, and we liked it. In a simple black gown, an understated Rihanna (right) arrived fashionably late in Tom Ford.

In glitter and shimmer:

Co-chair of this year’s Met Gala committee, actor Carey Mulligan (above) shined in this unique, scaly, Prada dress.

Vampire Diaries actor Nina Dobrev (left) shimmered in this Donna Karen Atelier dress that required an assistant to hold the train while she walked the red carpet. Camille Belle (centre) was elegant in Ralph Lauren paired with deep, burgundy lips, while Jessica Biel in Prada and Justin Timberlake in Tom Ford (right) both looked gorgeous, but were awkward together.

In colour:

Canadian model Coco Rocha (above) went the unconventional route in a vintage Givenchy suit previously worn by Elizabeth Taylor. It was bright and her hair matched the ensemble, but we love that she took a risk and she looked great.

One of our favourite dresses of the night was Mad Men’s January Jones (left) in an Atelier Versace gown. The colour was bright and on trend for the season, and she looked divine. Greta Gerwig (centre) channeled old world glamour in Prabal Gurung, who was also her date to the evening, while comedian Kristin Wiig (right) was beautiful in Stella McCartney. Very Mad Men-esque of her.

Interesting/questionably dressed:

(From left to right) Marc Jacobs in a Comme de Garcon shirt dress over white boxers, Florence Welce in Alexander McQueen, Karolina Kurkova (not feeling the uni-colour ensemble) and Rachel Zoe (so much fringe!) in Rachel Zoe, Christina Ricci in Thakoon, Chloe Sevigny in Miu Miu, and Sarah Jessica Parker in Valentino.

For his SS 2012 collection (now available in stores), bright tangerines and blues were covered in paisley prints and met with gold accents. While Karl Lagerfeld’s questionable British Raj-inspired collection was more muted and focused on textures, fabrics and jewelry, Thakoon went the opposite route with bright, bright colours.
