Waris Ahluwalia was in Toronto to fete the launch of “Uncrate India,” Holt Renfrew’s pop-up shop in collaboration with House of Waris. The collection features a mix of designer pieces curated during a trip to Rajasthan and Delhi in November 2013.
Waris was decidedly cool at the event; politely posing for photographs, answering questions, and giving his attention to each person he spoke to, occasionally flashing that charismatic smile we rarely get to see. He also wore his signature, half unbuttoned, crisp white dress shirt, revealing chest hair. It’s a look we’re not sure we can get behind 100%, but he’s Waris so it’s all perfectly acceptable.
The crowd: A diverse group of young and old, hipsters and fashionistas, the rich and famous (or at least appearing to be) – all vying for their 10 seconds with Waris Ahluwalia. We saw a mix of saris and anarkali suits, cocktail dresses, kurtas, and three-piece suits.
Spotted: Deepa Mehta, Devyani Saltzman, Jagmeet Singh (NDP MPP), Vinay Virmani, Ajay Virmani, Veronica Chail, Mohit Rajhans.
The setting: Tents with piles of bangles and bindis, a henna station, Bollywood dancers, loud music bhangra and club tunes, fantastic caterers. So, the usual exotic decor associated with Indian culture in non-Indian settings.
Overheard: “I love the colours!” “What a spectacle!” “It’s so fun!”
