We can always count on Lucian Matis to deliver at Toronto Fashion Week. The Romanian-born, Toronto-based fashion designer outdid himself, yet again, for Fall 2013 with MATIS, his versatile ready-to-wear collection.

The designer, who first caught our attention as the runner-up on season one of Project Runway Canada, showed a beautiful Fall collection that was inspired by the contrast between the civilized world and the wild world.

The Fall 2013 MATIS by Lucian Matis collection is soft, feminine and sexy. The designer presented his usual shift dresses for the season in both teal and burgundy. The runway also featured dramatic print pieces as well as subtle, muted plaid dresses. The three-quarter sleeve, knee length dress infused with a kaleidoscope of rich prints was breathtakingly spectacular! Simple cable knit dresses and suits completed the collection.

Jugni Style headed backstage after the runway show to chat with the designer about his ready-to wear collection and seek some fashion advice for our lovely readers.

Jugni Style: What was your inspiration for this collection?

Lucian Matis: I wanted to create a contrast between the civilized world and the wild world of the Amazon, but brought into more of a Fall coloration. That’s why I chose to use the cable knits in contrast with the animal prints and the floral prints.

JS: Do you derive a lot of your inspiration from nature?

Matis: A lot of it is from nature, but a lot of it is also from conversations I have with friends and family members. I’m really drawn to nature because that is one source of inspiration that is infinite.

JS: Did you have a particular piece from this collection that was your absolute favorite?

Matis: I had a few, but the finale piece [the long sleeve green plaid dress] for me is quite beautiful. It has a fullness to it. The structure around the shoulders and the muted plaid really completed the piece.

JS: What are the closet staples that every woman should have for Fall 2013?

Matis: I would tell women to simplify their wardrobe. A lot of Fall 2013 is about structured pieces – almost like a lux sportswear. Those are the items that are quite happening right now.

JS: How would you describe your personal style?

Matis: My personal style is definitely casual chic!

JS: Is there a particular celebrity on your wish list right now that you would love to dress?

Matis: I would love to dress Cate Blanchett. She is a blank canvas that you can change and transform.  She really transforms with the outfits, just like she does with her roles in films.

MATIS by Lucian Matis is sized XS to XL to suit all body, age and fashion types. For more information on how you can get your hands on these beautiful pieces, visit MATISbyLucianMatis.com.
