Set in Bhopal, India, Lipstick Under My Burkha follows the secret lives of four women seeking the freedom to express themselves openly.
“Lipstick is audaciously outspoken about women’s sexual desires and fantasies, both visually and verbally.”–Hollywood Reporter
Jugni Style is excited to once again partner with the Vancouver International Film Festival and sponsor the screenings of Lipstick Under My Burkha. The provocative & humorous film was in the news earlier this year for all the right reasons. Focused on female desire, the film challenged India’s archaic censorship system, and went on to receive critical acclaim internationally. It eventually released in India, and we’re excited to see it in our hometown next month at VIFF.
Rebellious and fun, Lipstick Under My Burkha is a feminist manifesto in fiction form. The film features four tales of female transgression: Rehana (Plabita Borthakur) is a Miley Cyrus-loving student for whom the burkha is a disguise masking her true desires; Leela (Aahana Kumra) is a materialistic man-eater who pursues some spectacular extracurricular activities behind her fiancé’s back; Usha (Ratna Pathak Shah) is an older woman who enjoys—really enjoys—erotic fiction; and Shirin (Konkona Sen Sharma) is a zealous door-to-door salesperson who, back at home, is oppressed by her husband.
The movie is especially pointed in its send-up of male cluelessness and sexual incompetence, with a brand of humour this is infectious and courageous.
