How is this for a crazy fashion collaboration: rap artist M.I.A. creates a capsule collection for Versus Versace, based on counterfeit Versace clothing found around London.
One-part street art, one-part digital prints and several parts M.I.A.’s distinctive style, this collaboration is for those of you with a taste for the bright and bold. M.I.A. proposed the idea of looking at counterfeit Versace items and reinventing them into new pieces for the special collection.
Expect silk shirts, jersey dresses, t-shirts, slim pants and jackets, all in lovely digital prints inspired by Versace’s iconic designs, like the gold medallion and Medusa head.
In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Donatella Versace said, “the collection represents all that I love of the new Versus Versace: It’s fast, it’s noisy, it’s brazen and it blends the world of music with that of fashion. I can’t wait to see it worn.” M.I.A. added, “Versace’s designs have always been copied, now it’s Versace that copies the copies, so those that copy must copy the copies. So this will continue.”
This reminds us of old Dapper Dan’s Boutique from the 80s and 90s, where Hip Hop stars would shop for one-of-a-kind clothing created out of counterfeit designer fabrics.
M.I.A. x Versus Versace releases on October 16 at select stores and online, while M.I.A.’s new album, “Matangi,” is out on Nov. 5. 2013.
