Every now and then, we pour a glass of wine and listen to old Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar songs on a banged up cassette tape from when we were kids.
It’s with great sadness and nostalgia that we remember Manna Dey, a celebrated Indian film playback singer and qawaali maestro, who passed away on October 24, 2013 in Bangalore at the age of 94.
Manna Dey is remembered for his distinctive voice and moving qawaalis, including perennial songs like “Ae Mere Zohra Jabeen” from the film Waqt and “Na To Caravan Ki Talaash Hai” from Barsaat Ki Raat. He began his career in 1942 and sang in multiple Indian languages over several decades.
