Day spas are a dime a dozen these days, with corner shops serving the masses with quickie mani-pedis, facials and threading, so it's always nice to find a place where a traditional spa atmosphere reigns supreme: to relax, indulge and be treated like a queen. Lady Orchids Rejuvenating Day Spa fits the bill in Vancouver, where clients are soothed and pampered at a royal oasis in the city.
Lady Orchids recently opened in the uber-hipster Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, and we were invited to try out their luxury Up5 Facial. An afternoon of being pampered and massaged at a spa is our idea of heaven, so we jumped at the chance to review this day spa for our fabulous readers.
Created by Ali Chang and Danielle Reyes, Lady Orchids is about creating a royal experience, from head and arm massages, to indulgent facials, and right down to the décor, which is trimmed in a royal shade of purple.
The spa has a simple goal: “We want you to de-stress and forget about the outside world," says Danielle, CEO of Lady Orchid.
The Up5 facial is 1.5 hours of pure relaxation that uses high-potency products from Usana's Sensei line. What makes the facial Up5 is the use of magnetic technology to drain toxins, stimulate cell regeneration, and prevent and minimize wrinkles. The machine itself is run over your face, resulting in a cool massage.
Our verdict: The spa is run by some really sweet, genuine people, which is a major draw for us. The Up5 facial is great for someone looking for a very relaxing experience and a glowing complexion, with muscle-melting massages to complete the experience. However, we're used to a spa experience that includes a behind-the-scenes relaxation lounge (where we can lounge on pillows like true queens) with snacks and drinks (like Spa Utopia and Miraj Hammam). We also missed those yucky but much needed extractions (bye bye blackheads) that a more technical, pore-cleaning facial would include (like Skoah).
Why we'd go back: Reasonable pricing on wax services, and to try the royalty-inspired facial using Oro Gold Cosmetics – a line that uses 24 karat gold to stimulate blood and faster cell rejuvenation. They also carry a line of locally-produced mineral make-up, TLC Minerals, which is great for Asian, South Asian and darker skin tones.
