Style Guide: What Not To Wear

Take this as our guide on what you should not wear this year (or ever again). Trends that died in 1994 (coloured contacts) don’t need to be resurrected in 2012.

Our tips: Stop following the crowd and forge your own path. Take inspiration from fashion editorial spreads or our stories here on Jugni Style, but choose pieces that compliment your lifestyle, passions and personality. If red lipstick makes you look like Ronald McDonald, don’t do it.

What to leave behind:

Coach bags: A logo bag does not fashion make. Coach, Michael Kors – so overdone. Go for classy, baby. A logo bag (ie. Coach) generally makes you look like you’re trying too hard to be “fashionable.” A better choice: a well constructed bag, made out of nice leather or other materials (Montreal brand Matt&Natt have a nice selection for vegans) can be picked up from more high-end retailers like Holts, or high street shops like Zara and even H&M. Consider Jonathan&Olivia, The Outnet and SSense.com for interesting collections. And if you really love your Coach, pick up a bag without the logos (the Coach Classic Stewardess and City bags are beautiful).

Red bottomed shoes: Christian Louboutin. The most over-worn shoe by socialites and Hollywood princesses alike, Louboutins are so 2010. Give us Prada, YSL or even Finsk. Please. A better choice: Take a cue from the streetstyle darlings at Jak and Jil (snapped by Vogue’s favourite photog, Tommy Ton) for creative and inspired shoes.

Colour Contact Lenses: NEVER. Ever. Unless you are starring in a one-woman show and it’s part of your “act,” just don’t. It makes us sad every time we see a pretty girl with fabulous brown skin and crazy blue contacts. Or violet, green, hazel, grey, red, etc. Sad face. A better choice: Be yourself!

Herve Leger Bandage Dress: The “it” dress of 2010, knockoffs of this dress can still to be found around the mall. Our issue: the dress has been worn by so many Hollywood and Bollywood stars, that it’s lost its novelty effect. A better choice: Something high-waisted, knee-length or midi-length for instant oomph, or for warmer days, the ever-forgiving caftan.
