For this week’s #ThrowbackThursday post, we share a guilty pleasure that reminds us of how far our music tastes have come. “Kaanta Laga” by DJ Doll is one gem that is as groundbreaking as it is cheesy!
Back in 2002, DJ Doll started the trend of remixing older Hindi movie songs, but packaged in an almost garishly sexy way. It was a gamechanger for music videos, as the emphasis shifted squarely to the “item girl,” Shefali Zariwala, her thong, and her racy gyrating.
Like most DJ Doll songs, this video was overplayed on all TV and radio, so much so that the singer’s sighing rendition of “Kaanta Lagaaaaa” sat like an earworm in my head forever. It’s interesting to see the song’s impact, as it ushered in countless other remixes with raunchier videos during the early millennium. The song was also quite controversial, with Zariwala getting notices from religious groups for indecency and for her comments on porn!
The video opens with Zariwala leafing through the latest “DUDE” magazine, which upsets her boyfriend so she goes on a gyrating campaign throughout the club to make him more upset. In the end, she gets to keep her man and her porno mag.
I’ll shamefully admit that I used to braid my hair like Zariwala after this video, it was that pervasive! The fashion is atrocious with all the glittery tops and jeans, and Zariwala’s long arm sleeve, but it’s fun to see what club styles it started off. There’s nothing outwardly special about the song’s production or sound, but it’s just such an iconic guilty pleasure that we could hardly resist making you shudder and sing along!
