Toronto Bollywood fans will have a lot to look forward to in September as the Toronto International Film Festival announced Tuesday morning that it will host the world premiere of Mary Kom.
Story by Sheetal Maya Nanda
Directed by Omung Kumar and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the sports biopic stars the glamorous Priyanka Chopra, who completely transforms herself physically to play India’s Olympic medal winning boxer, Mary Kom.
This remarkable story of triumph depicts Mary Kom’s journey from traditional village life in a remote part of Manipur, to high-stakes fights in India and around the world. Written by Saiwyn Quardras, the film will release worldwide on October 2, 2014.
Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director of TIFF, stated that more films from India will be unveiled in the coming weeks. The 39th Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 4 to 14, 2014.

Mary Kom has sparked debate over social media, with many wondering whether the highly bankable Punjabi actress should have been picked to play the role of Mary Kom, rather than an actress from India’s Northeast states or the Himalayan region.
We expect Priyanka Chopra, who last attended TIFF in 2009 for What’s Your Raashee, will walk the red carpet at this year’s festival. Lookout for Jugni Style’s coverage of TIFF 2014, including top films of the festival, interviews, red carpet photographs and more.
