Sundance, meet the Vancouver International South Asian Film Festival (VISAFF). On from July 15 – 17, this fest is packed with features, shorts, panel discussions, red carpet galas and all the glitz and glamour you can imagine.

And if you can’t score tickets to every star-studded Vancouver screening, here are two must-see films (as recommended by yours truly).

West is West

We still can’t forget the hilarious scenes from the 1999 internationally acclaimed, multi-award winning East is East. West is West is the sequel to this film and takes the Khan family on a journey from the U.K. to rural Pakistan. This 2011 British Comedy directed by Andy DeEmmony is kicking off the festival and is guaranteed to entertain.

Peepli Live

Directed by Anusha Rizvi and Mahmood Farooqui, Peepli Live is a 2010 Indian comic satire that explores the topic of “farmer suicides” and the subsequent media and political response. Produced by our all time fave Bollywood star, Aamir Khan, Peepli Live has won several awards and also screened at Cannes Film Festival and Sundance.

Sunday, July 17 – Closing Night
7pm – 9pm
SFU Woodwards

All dressed up and nowhere to go? Join us at VISAFF’s Opening Night Gala on July 15, and the Wine & Cheese following Saturday night’s screening of Islamic Punk film, The Taqwacores.

Jugni Style is thrilled to sponsor VISAFF this year. If the launch party in May is anything to go by, this year’s festival is going to be amazing.
