Vidya Balan is a rare and wonderful actress, so we feel bad for critiquing her sartorial choices. This year, she’s a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival (which is amazing!), but her red carpet outfits…oh no.
Exhibit A: Blindly following Sabyasachi wherever he goes. Sadly, even Sabyasachi can make mistakes. And unflattering blouses that Vidya keeps wearing on the red carpet are a key example of this. As one of our Facebook fans said: “Love Sabyasachi, but not how his blouses end up looking too busty on someone like Vidya Balan.” We agree. How about a deep V, boatneck or deeper round neck instead? Perhaps a better fit?
We do like the cream and gold border sari and black blouse with embroidered shoulders (above, second from the right), but we would have liked a little diversity in her red carpet choices.
Exhibit B: Hair and makeup. So severe and sooooo boring. She looks washed out – we would love to see a deep berry, red or fuchsia lip on Vidya. And just because you’re Indian doesn’t mean you need to look like you have coconut oil in your hair, right?
Exhibit C: Matching purses. No need to camouflage you purse, no one’s going to steal it on the red carpet! Seriously, your purse does not have to be of the same fabric and embroidery as your outfit.
Exhibit D: Ok, we like most of her jewelry, but she went a bit far at the Jeune et Jolie premiere with the nose ring which wasn’t necessary. Many of her pieces were provided by Amrapali Jewelry or House of Surana, like the two pieces below.
We swooned over this necklace and emerald ring, both by Jaipur-based Pankaj Surana from the House of Surana, who was inspired by the late Gayatri Devi in his work. Pankaj is a 10th generation jeweller (wow!). The hand carved, diamond studded cabachon emerald ring is exquisite.
