Meeting one of your heroes can be a daunting task, but celebrated director/producer Anurag Kashyap (Gangs of Wasseypur, Dev D, Bombay Velvet) wasn’t the imposing figure I expected.

Anurag Kashyap is in town for the Vancouver International South Asian Film Festival (VISAFF), where he’s presenting his film Ugly and leading a workshop for aspiring filmmakers on November 28. Kashyap’s work as a director, screenwriter and producer has been exceptional, with film festival gems like The Lunchbox (producer), That Girl in the Yellow Boots (writer-director), Udaan (writer-producer), and Dev D (writer-director) to his credit.
Interviewing Kashyap on Roundhouse Radio was an absolute treat, because he’s disarmingly candid about his filmmaking process while being quite shy amidst my gawking afterwards. We touched on his filmmaking journey from his days as a scriptwriter for Deepa Mehta‘s Water, to being the Indian fixture at Cannes Film Festival with his films Gangs of Wasseypur, Bombay Talkies, Monsoon Shootout, and Ugly. Unlike other interviews I’ve done before, this one is much more public so you’ll have to excuse all the moments were my inner fangirl came rushing out in my questions!
We’ve got some love going on for Roundhouse Radio, Vancouver’s newest talk and music radio station at 98.3FM and (you can also listen online). Rumnique Nannar can often be found talking about pop culture on Sense of Place, sometime between 10 and 12pm.
