Jugni Style has stumbled upon a new beauty secret and this one doesn’t involve tinted moisturizer or lip gloss. Instead, it’s all about asanas and savasana in what we’re calling, ‘Bikram Beauty.’

Sonam Kapoor (star of upcoming movies Raanjhnaa and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag), Kareena Kapoor and Lady Gaga have all used Bikram’s Yoga and Anne Hathaway even tapped into it to get Catwoman ready. So what’s the story behind this form of hot yoga?


Dana Dineen, owner and director of Bikram Yoga Toronto has taught Bikram Yoga for eight years. Many famous yogis have passed through her studio doors, including Lady Gaga and Joe Jonas. Jugni Style chatted with Dana to discover how sweating it out for 90 minutes can help transform your look and make you feel more beautiful.

Jugni Style: What is Bikram Yoga?

Dana: Bikram yoga was the first practice to incorporate a heated environment (40 degrees Celsius) with yoga. The Bikram method is a series of 26 postures, each practiced twice in a 90-minute class. The postures were selected to move safely through the body, step by step, so that through your 90 minute class there is no part of your body left untouched.

Jugni Style: What are the major beauty benefits of doing Bikram Yoga?

  • Body Benefits: People who practice Bikram Yoga develop better posture, long and lean muscles and have a youthfulness about them.
  • Weight Loss: Bikram yoga is an amazing calorie burner! Depending on the intensity of your practice, women can burn anywhere from 600-1100 calories in one class. But Bikram’s yoga helps to promote weight loss beyond burning calories. The practice helps to condition many systems and organs in the body including the thyroid gland, which is responsible for metabolism. With regular practice, many Bikram yogis find their metabolism becomes stronger, so their body works more efficiently at burning calories, even when you’re off the mat.
  • Mental Benefits: Bikram yoga is not only physically challenging but mentally as well. It helps promote strong focus and mindfulness of breath. You also cultivate positivity through your practice. And a positive attitude is always beautiful!
  • The “Bikram Glow”: Bikram Yoga is a great addition to your skin care regime. Because Bikram Yoga is done in such heat you are guaranteed to sweat a lot! The sweating is amazing for detoxification. As a result of the detoxing, Bikram yogis are often told they have a natural glow, a.k.a. “The Bikram Glow.” This is because the skin, the body’s largest organ, sheds the toxins it is exposed to and cleanses, leaving beautiful and supple skin. Bikram Yoga will give even the best moisturizer a run for its money!

Dana: To see significant change and continued progress aim to practice at least 3 times a week.

Jugni Style: What tips do you have for beginners?

Dana: Come to class with an open mind and a positive attitude! Take it easy your first few classes, your first goal is to stay in the room for the entire 90 minutes and learn to feel supported by the heat. Follow along as best as you can with the posture, but remember everyone is at a different place and it is important not to compare or judge. Try not to focus on what you can’t do yet. Rather, always focus on what you can do and enjoy the ride.
