This prince-in-waiting descends from Bhangra royalty. Our exclusive, behind the scenes interview with fashion connoisseur and Bhangra star, H Dhami.
When did you know you wanted to be a performer?
I was always interested in performing since I was a child. I remember when I was 6 years old and I went on a tour with my dad's band, Heera. I went to dance on the stage, but got stage fright and I ran off. My dad told me that if I wanted to be a star one day, I had to get back on the stage – so that was my first taste of performing. I carried on dancing in competitions, and singing in school, but getting an education was a priority for me. My dad said that he would support me 100% after I graduated, so that's what I did.
How has your life changed since you’ve started your music career?
I have to say that it's been a roller coaster ride. My life did a 360! But from 2007 to today, I've gotten more wiser and grown up a lot. I look at some of the footage from 2007 and I've matured a lot!
We grew up on your dad's music [Heera Group], so I really want to know if there are going to be any collaborations with your dad.
Lol, yes there will be. I will have 2 – 3 tracks with him on my new CD which will release in the upcoming year. It's funny, but I got really nervous infront of him.
What’s your favourite song?
Londono Patola. I remember when it came out, I was 12 years old, ripping up the dance floor. [JS concurs – we love that song!]
We heard that you’re starting your own fashion line. Why fashion?
Yes, I was going to start a fashion line but it fell through. I want to get back into it but I want to work with someone who has the same drive and inspiration.
I'm very fussy when it comes to fashion – I'm edgy. Fashion is important. It's part of who I am. I'm currently endorsing a line called Heyday – it's a footwear line of hightops and other shoes.
What’s unique about your style? We always see you in the bling and the blazers…
Edgy, I like to make some noise. I love colour and having fun! My favourite pieces are my blazers, hightops and hankies. Three years ago I wore an exclusive sequined D&G Blazer to the UK Asian Music Awards – everyone was loving it!
Which cities have you love performing in most?
I love Vancouver – I would love to work and live there. I have to say that Malaysia, LA, Las Vegas and London show me a lot of love too! I will never forget where I started from.
Any Exclusive news you can share with Jungi Style readers?
I'm working on a title track with Ajay Devgan for a Bollywood movie and I'm releasing a tour DVD and remix album in the next coming months.
