It’s always interesting when Indian designers call upon colonialism as the inspiration for their collection. The latest suspect: Bibhu Mohapatra Resort 2014.
To be fair, his inspiration comes from former French colony, Pondicherry, which has enjoyed its time in the limelight as the setting for Ang Lee’s/Yann Martel’s Life of Pi. The collection draws upon colonial architecture that includes French baroque design and prints, as well as lace, beading, embroidery, origami folds and leather. All very pretty.
We love the brilliant blue and green baroque prints on the cocktail dresses and skirts, and expect to see a few of these gowns on a red carpet sometime soon.
