Sonam Kapoor’s dramatic, gothic look at the Cannes Film Festival Closing Gala red carpet turned heads and had people debating on the merits of her black lace Alexander McQueen gown. But her vintage Bollywood glamour makeup and hair yielded universal sighs of happiness from all the style critics.
Learn how to recreate Sonam’s South Asian beauty look in a few easy steps.
Skin: Cleanse, tone and moisturize before starting with your makeup. Next, even out your complexion with your favourite foundation (on Sonam they used L’Oreal True Match Foundation in N7), tinted moisturizer or BB Cream. We like the Laura Mercier Tinter Moisturizer in Almond or Caramel, or the Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream in Medium (find out what a BB Cream is here). Apply your favourite concealer where needed.
Cheeks: A light dusting of a pink-plum blush will define your cheekbones without competing with the bright lips. Try MAC Cremeblend Blush in Restores Dazzle for a warm flush of colour.
Eyes: Start with L’Oreal Color Infallible in Coconut Shake on the whole eyelid, followed by a kohl or eyeliner in pearly white along your lower lash line. We know what you’re thinking, white eyeliner? On the lash and water lines, white liner helps make your eyes pop. We like Smashbox Eye Beam Double-Ended Brightener. Add a thin line of gel liner in black along the top lash line and gently smudge with a brush or Q-tip for a softer look. Our pick is always MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack, but we also like Make Up Forever Kohl Liner in Black 1K, which is infused with cottonseed oil and Vitamin E. Finish your eyes with several applications of lash thickening mascara. On Sonam, they used L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes in black on her upper and lower lashes.
Lips: Sonam’s look pops because of the rich red colour on her lips. Before applying lipstick, moisturize your lips with your face moisturizer or a good, non-waxy lip balm. Next, line the outline of your lips with a clear lip liner – this trick keeps bright lip colours from bleeding or smudging past your lip line. We love Make Up Forever Lip Line Perfector. Now fill your lips with a deep red lipstick, using a lip brush for accuracy. Sonam wore L’Oreal Colour Riche Lipstick in Passion Red 297, but we recommend that you choose a red that suits your complexion, whether it’s more brighter, orangey or has blue undertones.
Ta-da! Your red carpet look is ready to go.
