We’re rethinking prints (in a good way) for Spring/Summer 2015 after taking in Masaba Gupta’s collection at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week. The designer took inspiration from patakhas (firecrackers), which translated into fiery prints and whimsical hairpieces.
Masaba, who recently concluded her tenure as creative director at Satya Paul, joined hands with beauty brand Fiama Di Wills for a somewhat strangely-themed collection – the clothes featured embellishments inspired by Fiama Di Wills Shower Jewels, ie. bath beads. The gemstones represented different zodiac signs and were used as graphic prints (Masaba’s forte) and embellishments, a technique new to the designer.
Beyond the strange bath bead-inspired pieces, we loved the patakha, floral and paint brush prints, and were quite taken with the styling: large metallic necklaces, the whimsical firecracker hairpieces, half-sleeve blouses, minimalist hair and makeup.
Key trends include dhoti pants (this has been a huge trend for the past year in India); printed, long-sleeved, knee-length sheaths layered over saris; lots of draped pants and tops; and molten gold, fiery reds, beige, and rust colours.
