Even if we don't always admit it, we are diehard Bollywood fans. Give us a circular story, romantic interludes and Shah Rukh Khan's weepy eyes, and we're hooked.
But for the uninitiated, or those who haven't watched a Bolly flick since K3G (Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Ghum, obviously!), here's our guide to navigating the International Indian Film Academy awards in Toronto.
The Khans: Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan. 3 of the 4 heavyweight Khan's who for the most part rule Bollywood (with the exception of Saif who's gained more notoriety through his hookup with Bollywood royalty, Kareena Kapoor, than through his acting prowess).
The Kapoors: Where to start? There are so many Kapoors in Bollywood, it's hard to keep track. Prithvi Raj Kapoor started it all way back in the early 1900s, but his sons Raj, Shammi and Shashi are the ones who established the clan's place in Bollywood royalty. Their children and grandchildren have gone on to rule Indian cinema, with the most notables being Rishi, Randir, Karisma, Kareena and Ranbir. And we haven't even started on the other Kapoor families!
Retro Film Series at TIFF Lightbox: The retrospective of accomplished filmmaker, actor and patriarch, Raj Kapoor, and other movies from Bollywood's Golden Era, feature some of the nation's most celebrated works. Movies where plot lines connected and voluptuous heroines were torn between love and obligation. Jugni Style Recommends: Awaara and Andaaz.
A-list Fashion: Sonam Kapoor rocked out Jean Paul Gaultier couture at Cannes last month, and we're so excited to see what edgy designers she'll wear next. Papa Anil Kapoor is the official IIFA Ambassador, so we hope she'll join dad on this trip. Besides Sonam, Kareena Kapoor is another actress to keep an eye out for. She loves the bling of Manish Malhotra, but has been known to wear Roberto Cavelli and Valentino from time-to-time. Another favourite is Miss World turned actress Dia Mirza who is known for her consistent, subtle, sartorial elegance.
IIFA Rocks: This fashion and music show will boast designs from Sabyasachi, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Vikram Phadnis and Canadian designer selection's from The Bay. Hosted by director and gossip show host, Karan Johar and actress Anushka Sharma, this is the place to be if you love couture and Indian music. Special guests Jermaine Jackson, Bipasha Basu (former model, now actress)will also take the stage.
Graphic Art: Long ago, when film posters were still painted by hand, artisans across India created poetic odes that portrayed heartache, anger, joy and deceit on large billboards and showcards. Visit the ROM to experience this craft in the Bollywood Cinema Showcards: Indian Film Art from 1950s and 60s.
The Parties: Like TIFF, Toronto will be ablaze with A-list, B-list and wannabe parties playing host to any number of Bollywood actors in town. A few parties are ticketed:
